The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is a statistically reliable, cross culturally valid measure of intercultural competence. It is based on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS), developed by Dr. Milton Bennett. The IDI can be used for a variety of purposes, including 1) individual assessment, 2) group analysis, 3) organizational needs assessment, 4) program evaluation, and 5) research.
The IDI is a 50 item paper-and-pencil (or online) instrument that assesses the major stages of intercultural competence, as conceptualized in the DMIS. The instrument is easy to complete, and can generate a graphic profile of an individual's or group's predominant phase of intercultural development, along with textual interpretation of that stage and associated transition issues.
The IDI measures cognitive structures rather than attitudes. It is less susceptible to situational factors, more stable and more reliable than other measures in use.
